On Aug. 6, the Chinese Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda announced that the giant panda Qiaoyuan died at 6:20 a.m. on July 24, 2026, at the age of 33 years old, following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts due to illness.

According to the center, Qiaoyuan studbook number 416, was a female rescued in December 1993 in Baoxing County, Sichuan Province. Since Dec. 10, 2025, she had exhibited symptoms including abdominal distension and abnormal weight gain. Medical examinations revealed severe cardiac dysfunction accompanied by massive ascites, as well as irreversible renal fibrosis.

During the treatment period, paracentesis was performed more than 10 times, draining over 10 kg of fluid each time; however, the ascites repeatedly reaccumulated, and uncontrollable epistaxis persisted. On July 7, Qiaoyuan began refusing food, became lethargic, and showed weak respiration. On July 23, she suffered another severe episode of epistaxis. Despite exhaustive resuscitation efforts, she passed away on July 24.

Previously, on June 11, the center reported that Qiaoyuan was temporarily out of immediate danger but continued to suffer from ascites. Caretakers noted that her daily food intake was minimal, and she sustained vital signs relying solely on small amounts of bamboo shoots and three milk feedings per day.

In the article announcing her passing, a caretaker wrote, "You have truly worked so hard these past six months, my dear friend!"
