The excavation of Sanxingdui bronze figures with golden masks has caused a sensation. It was thanks to the wisdom of the ancestors who wore these “golden facial masks” that the spectacular ancient Shu civilization was created. But let’s direct our eyes to the other side of the planet for a moment, to another world-shattering golden mask found underground: the Agamemnon Golden Mask, an artifact from Ancient Greece, an era with its own incredible civilization. This mask has long been seen as an iconic artifact representing the Mycenaean civilization of Ancient Greece.

Both of the civilizations—Chinese Sanxingdui and the Ancient Greek Mycenae—flourished around the same time and wound up leaving a similarly lingering mystery for future generations. With curiosity and questions, musicians from Greece and China—including Mikay, Faye Yuan, and FOTI—jointly composed the song “Millennia Later” in Greek and Chinese. It has been announced to have been chosen as the theme song for the global promotion of Sanxingdui-Jinsha for International Museum Day, and is being jointly released by the Sichuan International Communication Center (SICC), the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Hellenic Republic, QQMusic, and KuGou Music. This song is expected to be officially premiered on a variety of global music platforms such as Spotify on May 18.

Including the lyric “Millennia later, in the dust, you awakened me...”, “Millennia Later” weaves magnificent harmonies and epic lyrics into euphonious melodies that commemorate the ancient Shu region and the Aegean Sea from thousands of years ago, helping the world appreciate the modern harmony of the two ancient civilizations.

Before the official release of the theme song, the three musicians gave an exclusive interview to our reporter via a video call. They not only shared with us behind-the-scenes stories of the song but also expressed their deep love for Chinese culture.

Last year, the SICC and the Sanxingdui Museum collectively launched the “Sanxingdui-Jinsha Drift Bottle” global initiative. Chinese diplomatic representatives and overseas influencers were invited to introduce younger generations across the globe to the Bronze Sacred Tree and Golden Masks from the Sanxingdui site in Sichuan through promotional product “unboxing” and a lottery. Having gone to multiple countries—including Brazil, Japan, Vietnam, and Thailand, this initiative was finally poised to head for Greece, its 5th stop. On May 13, 2025, the special exhibition titled, “Bronze Glow: Ancient Shu Civilization”, was also inaugurated in grand fashion at the Museum of Estia Neas Smyrnis in Athens, Greece.

This rare opportunity made possible a wonderful encounter between Sanxingdui and the three musicians who live in Greece.

Singer Faye Yuan, a native of China’s Fujian, currently resides in Greece. Yuan had heard of Sanxingdui before, but she had not probed into the story of this civilization. For FOTI and Mikay, both Greeks, they of course knew very little about Sanxingdui. According to Yuan, before starting to compose the music, they first dived into mountains of reading about Sanxingdui. During this process, they were surprised to find that "the ancient Shu civilization, even at a distance of thousands of miles, had some similarities with the Mycenaean civilization in Greek history."

“At that point, we felt goosebumps!” said Greek musician Mikay, explaining how she felt then during the interview. She added, “We never expected that they would share quite so many similarities, despite the great distance.”

When composing “Millennia Later”, the three of them blended some of these shared elements such as bronze, gold, etc. in an attempt to bring out resonance amongst audiences from China and Greece. The Bronze Sacred Tree from Sanxingdui, for example, corresponds to the olive tree from Greece, while this line “The golden scepter points the right way through the maze” combines the golden scepter from Sanxingdui with the tale of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, a famous episode from ancient Greek mythology, which imbued the lyrics and stories with a legendary and ancient vibe.

The music video for the theme song was produced by the SICC and the three musicians, and the scenes featuring female singers were filmed and edited by the musicians themselves. To align the scenes with the theme, the musicians specifically rented two sets of Hanfu from a Hanfu shop opened by a Chinese person living in Athens, so as to perform wearing traditional Chinese makeup and styling.

“We filmed the music video at the Acropolis of Athens, with the Parthenon in the background, Greece’s landmark building. And we decided to sing in Hanfu so as to bring China to Greece,” Mikay noted.

At the Sanxingdui Museum, visitors usually pause before the glass case displaying the golden mask. By taking a picture at a certain angle, they are able to take a photo through the glass that makes it look like one of them is wearing the mask. This famous “shadow-less glass” inspired Faye Yuan in the song’s climax: “Reflecting your contour, merging with you, and becoming myself.” It has also become the inspiration for the song’s title “Millennia Later”, which aims to create a profound dialogue between ancient and modern civilizations, while arousing curiosity in young people and daring them to dream of what might happen millennia later.

Producer FOTI mentioned that, whether in creating the melody or lyrics, they tried not to limit themselves to an entirely Chinese style or a specific music genre. Instead, they catered to international preferences, thereby allowing more youth worldwide to learn about Sanxingdui and China’s ancient Shu civilization through the song.

In “Millennia Later”, we can hear two different female voices. However, amazingly, if the audience do not distinguish them carefully, it will be hard to tell which part is sung by Faye Yuan, whose native language is Chinese, and which one is by Greek singer Mikay, who is “learning by singing”. What is even more amazing is that Mikay learned and memorized all the Chinese lyrics in just three hours.

“When finishing memorizing the lyrics myself, I realized that Mikay had memorized them as well.” Faye Yuan said with a smile, and said she thought it was incredible. In fact, Mikay’s Chinese talent benefits from her deep affection for Chinese songs and culture. She can sing not only old songs including Teresa Teng’s “The Moon Represents My Heart” and “Sweet as Honey” fluently, but also popular songs such as G.E.M.’s “Bubble”. During the interview, Mikay sang a segment of a Chinese song to prove her chops.

Mikay also shared her secret to learning Chinese at the event, which was to listen to Chinese songs frequently and extensively, especially Teresa Teng’s songs, which she highly recommended. “Singing Chinese songs is actually simpler than speaking Chinese, since you can integrate all the tones into your singing,” Faye Yuan explained.

Not only that, but FOTI and Mikay had also been to China, where they worked and lived for three years.

“If it weren’t for missing my parents, I would have settled in China forever,” Mikay told the reporter.

During their three-year stay in China, FOTI and Mikay visited numerous places. Besides Fujian, they also worked and traveled in Hunan, Guangdong, and Hainan, where they always enjoyed visiting local museums and were attracted by the mysteries they found there. “If we go to China again in the future, we will definitely head to Sichuan and visit Sanxingdui,” FOTI and Mikay emphasized.

Last year, Faye Yuan appeared on the Greek version of the “The Voice of China” music variety show, where she sang her original song written in Greek, which then went viral in Greece. It was the first time a Chinese singer had composed music in Greek. Later, when the final episode of the show was recorded, Faye Yuan was invited back to the stage, with the show manager arranging for all the participants to sing Yuan’s song together. Notably, Yuan also took this opportunity to join the Universal Music Group and released her first solo single, “Athina”, in February of this year.

Before collaborating on “Millennia Later”, Yuan, Mikay, and FOTI were already good friends. They all keenly post music-related cover videos on social media, and have had a long-standing collaborative relationship with each other. Nevertheless, they did not have the opportunity to meet offline until they “officially” met for the first time at a Hollywood movie shoot.

After meeting and chatting more deeply, Yuan learned that the two had lived in Fujian, China, for a period of time, where she herself had grown up. This wonderful coincidence made Yuan feel that it was fate, that Mikay was to be her sister in Greece.

On QQMusic, we can also find the Chinese song, “Blah Blah Blah”, which is produced and released by FOTI and Mikay. FOTI said that after returning to Greece from China, they felt that many Chinese symbols had been engraved into their cultural genes. Additionally, their three-year experience in China had had a revolutionary impact on their music style and creative habits.

The three of them are all musicians under the Universal Music Group and also somewhat famous internet celebrities on TikTok and Instagram. This project, collaborating on “Millennia Later” together, feels in Yuan’s words like “realizing a dream”.
