After 54 days and 23 hours, the explorer Liu Yong from Chengdu, Sichuan, completed the adventure of crossing the Atlantic in an unpowered canoe using paddles on March 26, 2023.

Liu Yong was 54 years old at that time. He and his teamnavigateda distance of 5,239 kilometers solely with hands, averaging over 600,000 paddles per person.Unquestionably, this is an extraordinary adventure.

"There were several times when I thought I couldn't make it back this time!" Before departure, Liu Yong and his companions underwent long-term collaborative training at sea, but there were still unexpected situations during the voyage, for example, thesevere seasickness thatpersisted till the 28th day.

Six people squeezed into a single canoe for nearly two months, rowing continuously in shifts for 24 hours. At the same time, they hardly stood up, relying on drinking raw water and eating dehydrated food to conserve energy, encountering various weather conditions, ocean currents, and dangers along the way.

Despite the danger, the experience was so special. On the deserted sea, the turbulent waves slowly receded, seagulls flapped their wings, waves rolled, the sunrise slowly ascended, the dawn revealed its first light, and stars twinkled... the dreamlike scenerywasunforgettable. "You feel grateful to be alive and then look forward to tomorrow with a more positive mindset," said Liu Yong.

It is reported that ocean rowing is one of the least participated outdoor adventure activities in the world, with a total of only 1,800 participants, and just over half of them succeed.

Regarding what adventure means, Liu Yong has different answers at different times. However, he has always believed that adventure is an essential part of life but not everything. "Life itself is an adventure," Liu Yong said.
