Making a dragon boat out of cans may sound unbelievable. However, a Chengdu woman miraculously managed to create a piece of ice and snow armor with 2,600 scales out of 140 cans, fabricated an imposing “golden armor” from 3,000 nutshells, and transformed instant noodle buckets into magnificent Tang Dynasty jewelry. Yan Hong has become a highly-discussed Chinese-style artisan with her techniques for “turning waste into treasures” and her fresh interpretation of traditional culture.
This time, Yan Hong turned her attention to folk culture as she made an exquisite dragon boat out of cans. It took Yan Hong 10 days from when the idea struck her to completethe work transforming discarded cans into a delicate and unique ornament that can be used as an incense burner.
For Yan Hong, creating works with characteristics from local customs during traditional festivals is something she has always desired to attempt. She made faux velvet flowers at first, then stumbled into the handicrafts industry, creating hit works being listed on ‘hot online searches’, and later, she collaborated with an Indonesian designer at Milan Fashion Week. Yan Hong has now worked as a creator of ‘Chinese-style crafts’ for nearly four years. During this time, she has risen from being completely unknown to hugely popular, receiving a wide variety of honors and accolades along the way. Simultaneously, people regard her as a promoter of traditional Chinese culture and a facilitator of bringing Chinese crafts to the world.
