The Mid-autumn festival is a traditional Chinese festival when the moon grows round and people get together. In that day, apart from appreciating the moon and eating mooncakes, people have to appreciate the osmanthus and drink osmanthus wine.

In the ancient time, people regarded osmanthus flowers and fruits as the "endowed fruits" and the symbol of nobility and good luck.

People also have created lots of legends based on osmanthus and moon. The story of Wu Gang is the most famous one. It is said that there's a 500-Zhang-tall osmanthus tree in the moon. Wu Gang, a man in Han Dynasty (206 BC-221) was asked to cut the tree in the moon as a punishment for his disobedience of the rule when cultivating immortality. But the tree recovers soon after being cut. Therefore, Wu Gang has been working for thousands of years while the tree keeps completed. It was only in the Mid-autumn festival that he is permitted to take a rest and celebrate the festival.
