Katsura is colorful. In spring, their leaves are carmine. In summer, they are green. In autumn, their colors change rapidly from green to blue, to orange, yellow, and finally to orange and red. In the late autumn, they become red. Besides, there can be various colors in a tree under the influence of temperature and humidity. Their leaves are shaped as a heart, making them lovely and romantic.
More surprisingly, the leaves and rinds of katsura contain pyrocatechol which endows the tree with caramel-like and tea-like fragrance, especially in autumn and winter when the colors start to change and the leaves fall.
What’s more, katsura fruits can be used as medicines to relieve fright, convulsion, and cold limbs. Their rinds and leaves can be used to make tannin extracts. The maltol in their leaves is usually used as a fragrance enhancer in the perfume industry.
