Green and bare, with big black eyes, a veined jay is a lovely animal. In fact, its big "eyes" are not real, but a pair of symmetrical eye-shaped veins which will later grow into the patterns on the wings.

When a vein jay larva is grown up, it will put on a beautiful "floral skirt". One of the most distinctive features of it is the light blue fragments on its wings which make it look graceful and exquisite. If the veined jay larvae pupate in spring or summer, it will take about ten days for them to grow into the imagines. However, if they pupate in winter, they have to survive the winter as pupae and get out in the following spring.

Veined jays have better eyesight than human being that enable them to recognize more colors. They fly fast and move agilely. Recognizing colors is one of their important skills. It helps them to detect food and acknowledge the other butterflies flashing by which could be either opponents or potential partners.
