This is a bird that works the "night shift".

They live by the water and go out at night. When dusk falls, with long feathers and lime green "raincoats", they strike with precision. They are the "good fishermen" in the dark: the black-crowned night herons, also shortened to night herons.

During the day, they often hide in swamps, thickets or forests, and after dusk, they disperse from their habitat into small groups to forage. In the morning, however, before the sun comes out, they will return to their hiding places one after another to rest. They generally do not leave their hermitage unless disturbed or threatened.

Night herons mainly feed on animal-based foods such as fish, frogs, shrimp, and aquatic insects. But why can the black-crowned night herons forage at night? This is due to their special eye: the eyes of adult night herons are completely red, so they can see objects clearly at night. On quiet nights, they wade in shallow water for food in twos and threes or stand alone in the water waiting for prey. Their eyes intently fixed on the water.

Night herons are also "good fishermen" in the dark. It will "fish" with bait. When fishing, the night heron will first drop wild fruit into the water and then wait on the bank. Once it spots prey, it will quickly rush into the water and feast.
