On the morning of July 21, Hong Kong Ocean Park released a press on social media announcing that An An, the world’s longest-living male giant panda under human care, passed away at the age of 35, the equivalent of 105 years in human age, at the Ocean Park.

For over 20 years, An An had been with Hong Kong people, leaving them happy memories, and passing on the knowledge about giant panda care and the idea of harmony between humans and nature.

Having learnt the news, Hong Kong people expressed their condolence by comments on Hong Kong Ocean Park’s social media.

Some netizens recalled their visit to An An through photos and videos.

Some other netizens mentioned Jia Jia, a female giant panda who passed away in 2016, "Don't forget to get to Jia Jia."

12-year-old An An and 20-year-old Jia Jia arrived at Hong Kong Ocean Park by a private plane from Hetaoping base, Wolong County, Sichuan Province as a gift from the Central Government to celebrate the second anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland. In 2016, 38-year-old Jia Jia passed away in Ocean Park after her health took a turn for the worse. She got two Guinness World Records—"the oldest giant panda currently living in captivity", and "the oldest giant panda ever living in captivity".

According to Ocean Park, An An's health condition and food intake declined in the last few weeks. On July 17, his health saw a sharp turn for the worse. Having learnt about the news, the Hong Kong netizens were worried and left encouraging messages on social media. "Veterinarians from Ocean Park and the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department decided to perform the procedure of humane euthanasia on An An after consulting China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda."

China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda expressed condolence for An An’s leave. "We're grateful for the wonderful memories An An left to us, and the Ocean Park‘s good care and company to An An."

It is reported that the Ocean Park will set a condolence book outside the Hong Kong Jockey Club Sichuan Treasures, where An An had been staying, for the visitors to mourn over their dear friend.
