The new book launch event for "Tafel in Aba" was held in Chengdu on October 27th, co-hosted by Sichuan University Press and the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture Bureau of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
This book is a translated version of the relevant content about Aba Prefecture from the travel note "Meine Tibetreise" by the modern German geographer Albert Tafel. His personal travel note was published in 1914 and became an important reference for the Western academic community to understand the natural and cultural conditions of Western China at that time. Tafel was a student of the renowned geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen, who coined the term "Silk Road." Tafel was also the first professional geographer to conduct geological surveys of the Yellow River's major bend in Ruoergai, making significant contributions to the field.
The book includes rich content observed by Tafel's expedition team along the way, such as mountains, rivers, flora and fauna, climate, folk customs, and legendary stories in Aba Prefecture. Additionally, the book contains a wealth of historical photographs covering various aspects including towns, villages, transportation, temples, residences, clothing, cuisine, and festivals, showcasing the high historical and cultural value of the region.
During the book launch event, attendees pointed out that " Tafel in Aba" vividly portrays the living scenes of Aba Prefecture in 1907, presenting the unique cultural and natural landscape of western China from the perspective of foreigners more than a hundred years ago. The translation and publication of this book not only contribute to promoting cultural exchanges between China and other countries but also reflect the social development and civilization achievements of Western Sichuan over the past century, embodying multifaceted cultural value.
