If Sichuan locals order a two-flavor pot at a hop pot restaurant, this can be seen as being a welcomingaccommodation for friends from other places. However, this is wholly unnecessary when Sichuan locals eat with Park Daeil, a South Korean food blogger who is a devoted glutton of spicy Sichuan cuisine.

As he explained, “We South Koreans have no fears of spicy food, so the spiciness in Sichuan cuisine is something I can easily accept. What’s more, Sichuan chili peppers contain a lot of spices, making the flavorsstronger and more fragrant.”In Daeil’s memory, thespiciestSichuan dish that he ever tasted, that impressed him most, was not in Zigong but in Deyang. “There is a restaurant whose specialty is‘Yaba Rabbit’, where the cooked diced meat is both savory and spicy, which truly made my mouth burn.”Then he added, “Zigong barbecue is incredible and extremely palatable, and the barbecue I ate in Chengdu doesn’t even compare.”

As a ‘slash’youth with multiple titles, Daeilspends most of his time managing his companyand only goes out to shoot thesevideos in his spare time. His social media channel ‘dayifoodtrip’ already has nearly 300,000 followers on Chinese internet platforms.

Daeil's story with China started from 2011, when he went to Beijing to work and learn Chinese. In the following years, he took up different jobs in Seoul, Chengdu, and Shanghai, and it wasn’t until 2020 that he decided to settle in Chengdu. “When I first came to Chengdu on business in 2017, I considered it to be a prosperous city with a huge variety of delicious food, especially an unforgettable nightlife!”, he remarked.

During his time in Chengdu, Daeilhas gradually developed the ‘Chengdu style’ way of life. For example, he hunted for food in remote corners of some old communities and alleys to understand the culinarytastes of authentic Sichuan cuisine. He pickedcool places such asDayi, the Mount Qingcheng, and Aba as his preferred holiday spots during hot summer days.Additionally, when Daeilwent to his Chinese friend’s home for Chinese New Year, he also laughed about and played offthose elders’‘urgings to get married’with the grace of a natural.

Most importantly, Daeilstarted to treat food as a bridge to connect different people and exchange diverse cultures. He stated, “Through food videos, communications can be facilitated among netizens from a variety of areas, which is most significantto me.”

One of the most recent videoson Daeil’s channel is about him taking the high-speed trainto Hong Kong. Before this trip, he had traveled to more than a dozen provinces and cities, such as from Beijng to Guangzhou, and from Qufu to Dunhuang. Nonetheless, his journey to Chinese food is still one that's ongoing to this day.
