Last week, a video titled "Native Foreigner Welcomes Everyone to Have Fun in Chengdu" sparked discussions among netizens. In the three-minute vlog, Dieter, a foreign blogger who has been living in Chengdu for many years, personally taught viewers how to buy street food, ride shared bicycles, and order coffee at roadside stalls, demonstrating in detail how to "explore Chengdu with just a mobile phone."
In the comment section of the video, many Chengdu locals praised Dieter, while many foreign netizens expressed gratitude to Dieter, stating that the tips were very helpful.
Dieter hails from Leuven, a beautiful city in Belgium. After graduating from university with a degree in Chinese language, he received a scholarship to continue his Chinese studies at Sichuan University. In 2009, at the age of 24, Dieter visited Chengdu for the first time and fell in love with the city.
"In the past decade or so, I have done many things in Chengdu, and I have also made many mistakes." In 2013, Dieter and his friends opened their first "Beer Nest" in Chengdu, specializing in local craft beer and Belgian beer. Later, Dieter started his own foreign trade company, exporting various Chinese products to Europe. In addition, through his platform, Dieter shares the vibrant life of Chengdu with the international community, introducing the food, drinks, entertainment, and lifestyle of Chengdu, and occasionally organizing offline events. With his rich entrepreneurial experiences in Chengdu, Dieter quickly integrated into the Chengdu life, and now everyone affectionately calls him "Brother Di" or "Boss Di."
"Chengdu is truly a city that you can't escape from once you come here, trust me." In the interview, Dieter expressed his love for Chengdu fluently in Sichuan dialect. Having spent nearly 15 years in Chengdu, Dieter has witnessed the rapid development of the city. He loves the city's vitality and especially admires the Chengdu people for their inclusiveness, kindness, and passion to enjoy life.
In Dieter's strategy video, the "Three Essential Phrases for Foreigners to Learn" caught particular attention: "Hello, thank you, Alipay!" With a mobile phone in hand, Dieter uses these three phrases to communicate and handle payment when eating, riding bicycles, taking public transportation, and ordering coffee in Chengdu.
"After staying in Chengdu for over ten years, I have found that mobile payment is very convenient here. For example, taking the subway, riding a bike, or buying egg tarts, you can easily do it with just a scan on your mobile phone." Dieter discovered that besides the three essential phrases, the catchphrase "You scan me or I scan you" is also very practical.
"The Chengdu Universiade is about to begin, and many foreigners will come, including my fellow Belgians." As a "native" of Chengdu, Dieter wants to personally teach everyone these life skills, "hoping that this video will allow everyone to better enjoy life in Chengdu." Dieter said.
