With a forceful swing of the wooden board, thousands of golden sparks instantly fill the night sky, immersing the audience in a dazzling fireworks display. The dragon dancers wear a straw hat, bare their chest, and skillfully maneuver the dragon, performing various techniques.

Experiencing the fire dragon lantern dance up close, besides being awe-inspiring, your initial reaction is bound to be one of exhilaration. For most people, it is a rare and spectacular sight. However, for Su Lei, the dragon dance team leader, and his dragon dance team, it has been their way of life for over 20 years.

As the fourth-generation inheritor of the Huanglongxi Fire Dragon Lantern Dance, Su Lei remarks that his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all had a background in fireworks, and he has inherited this intangible cultural heritage.

Su Lei vividly recalls the nervous and eager feelings. "When I first started working with molten iron, I also suffered many injuries. One time, due to an operational mistake, I accidentally spilled molten iron on myself. It took me a whole week to recover from that injury."

The molten iron melts in flames at a temperature close to 1200 degrees Celsius, making it unbearably scorching for those in close contact with the iron sparks. Many members of the dragon dance team bear scars from burnson their shoulders, waists, and feet, not to mention Su Lei, who holds the position of the iron sparks performer within the team.

Even after experiencing countless battles and enduring daily exposure to high temperatures, he has never truly given up on this tradition. "I have considered giving up, but I cannot let go of my emotional attachment to the iron sparks and the fire dragon lantern dance." Having started inheriting this intangible cultural heritage in his teens, he believes that his life has merged seamlessly with the splendid iron sparks. "I never thought of making a living out of it; it's just the emotional attachment that keeps me going."

Since the beginning of this year, Su Lei's fire dragon lantern dance team has seen a significant increase in performances. "During the Spring Festival alone, we performed in over 30 shows at more than 10 venues."

"Our dragon dance team used to have up to 32 members, but now we only have 16." The shortage of performances and low income are the biggest challenges Su Lei faces, and the team is in dire need of fresh blood, but few are willing to endure the hardships. Faced with this situation, Su Lei has come up with a solution. He not only formed a dragon dance team and actively participated in various domestic competitions but alsocooperatedwith Huanglongxi School in Shuangliu Districtin 2007 to introduce the dragon dance as an intangible cultural heritage into the school.

Su Lei is confident about the fire dragon lantern dance: "I never intentionally promote it because there is never a shortage of people who come to watch it live." For Su Lei, the most important thing now is to preserveand pass on the fire dragon lantern dance. "The most difficult moments have already passed, and everything is getting better," says Su.
