Whenthe 2008 Wenchuan earthquakestruck, 14-year-old Tang Xuemeiwas trapped in a collapsed school building for 28 hourswith her left leg stuck. She recalls, "The moment I fell, the only thought in my mind was that I had to survive."

When she was rescued, Tang Xuemei's leg was severely injured and had the amputation.

After the amputation, she was fitted with a prosthetic leg. To make herself appear like a normal person, she practiced relentlessly. While others wore their prosthetics for three hours a day, she wore hers for six, despite the wound caused byfriction. "Thanks to theprosthetic, I no longer needed crutches. I felt happy about every step I took."

In 2009, Tang Xuemei first came across sitting volleyballat a rehabilitation center in Shanghai. She quickly fell in love withthatand decided to stay on the team.

Inthe first month,"we had to crawling around the basketball courtforten roundsin a given time, it was a very intense training." Tang recalled that atthe beginning, she had to change 2 to 3 pairs of pants each month, as they were worn out bythe training. Her skin formed calluses and her hands were bruised.

Later, Tang Xuemei was selected intothe national sitting volleyball team and became a main attacker. Her first international competition was the World Championships in the United States.

At thattime, 16-year-old Tang Xuemei was just a substitute player. To her surprise, she was sent on to serve during the championship final against the United States. "Once I was on, there was only one ideain my mind —come on! I even won the best server in that match."

Eventually, the Chinese Women's Sitting Volleyball Team won the 2010 World Sitting Volleyball Championship with a record of 8 victories, and qualified for the 2012 London Paralympics. "I stood on the podium, and couldn't help but tear upwhen the national flag was raised."

On September 7, 2012, the Chinese team beat the United States 3:1 in the sitting volleyball final at the London Paralympics.

In 2021, the Chinese Women's Sitting Volleyball Team won the silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics, losing to the United States. Speaking of the match, Tang Xuemei was a bit pitiful, but "losing is normal, we lost this year, but we will come back next year". The charm of sports lies in the courage to win and the fearlessness to lose.

Currently, Tang Xuemei is actively preparing for the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Now, she walkson the streetwearing shorts confidently. She says thatshewearswhatever she wants and doesn't care if her prosthetic leg is exposed.

Tang Xuemei says, "There was a period when I couldn't made it, but I have grown better underthe sunshine."
