Qujiang River, the largest tributary on the left bank of the Jialing River, also known as "Qian Water" in ancient times, was called "Yanqu Water".

Qujiang River basin is one of the areas with the most violent flooding. From 2003 to 2011, Qujiang River basin was flooded almost every year. In the flood season of 2021, Qujiang River basin became the most frequent flooding area in Sichuan. Qujiang River basin suffered sevenrounds of heavy rainfall that year, causing considerable property damage.

In order to prevent and cope with the flooding of Qujiang River, Sichuan province has planned and built three backbone water conservancy projects – Tuxikou Reservoir, Huangshipan Reservoir and Huangyudong Reservoir, in Qu River basin for flood control purposes.
