来川12年，实现了我的职业理想

詹姆斯·阿亚拉，目前定居在四川，来自美国。2010年，詹姆斯来到中国四川。2012年至今，他在成都大熊猫繁育研究基地工作，担任动物行为学家。

James Ayala from the United Statesis currently living in Sichuan.In 2010, James came to Sichuan, China, from his hometown. Since 2012, he has been working in Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

“嗨，你好。”随着一声轻快的语调，推开门，看见的是一位身着休闲装的中年男性：深蓝色的立领套头外套，搭配着牛仔裤和运动鞋。单看他的装扮，很难想象他和大熊猫有什么联系，唯一能显示出他身份的是左胸前别着的成都大熊猫繁育研究基地的工作牌。

"Hi."With a brisk tone, the door was pushed open, and a middle-aged male in casual clothes came into view: a dark blue stand-up collar pullover jacket with jeans and trainers. Just looking at his outfit, it’s hard to establish any connection between him and giant pandas. The only thing that showedhis identity wasthe nameplate with the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on his left chest.

一提起熊猫，来自成都大熊猫繁育研究基地的动物行为学家詹姆斯的话匣子就打开了。“你们知道吗，对我这个专门研究熊猫的人来说，区分每只大熊猫也还是会有一些难度的。”“和人类一样，每只熊猫都有不同的性格。”詹姆斯拿出手机，边说边展示他拍摄的大熊猫，讲述他的四川故事。

When it comes to pandas, James, an animal behavior researcher from Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has a lot to say. “For me, who specializes in pandas, it can still be a bit difficult to distinguish each one too." "Just like humans, pandas have very different personalities."James showed his photographs of pandas as he talked,telling us his experince in Sichuan.

今年是詹姆斯在四川和大熊猫朝夕相处的第10年。但在他看来，自己与大熊猫的缘分其实远远超过这个数字。

2022 marks James’ 10th year in Sichuan with pandas. But as far as he is concerned, his connection with pandas is actually far exceeds this number.

“我第一次看见熊猫是在美国华盛顿的国家动物园，那是1980年的事了。当时，一想到我可以看见一只真正的大熊猫，我就止不住地兴奋。”有着黑白相间的颜色，浑身上下都是圆滚滚的，毛茸茸的大熊猫吸引了孩童时詹姆斯的注意。但提起那次与大熊猫初见的场景，詹姆斯笑了笑，有点无奈地说：“我记得当时有点悲伤和失望，因为前去看大熊猫的游客很多，我只能离得远远地看一眼。”

"The first time I saw pandas was in Washington D.C at the National Zoo in US., in 1980. At the time, I couldn’t stop being excited when I thought I could see a real giant panda."With its black and white colours and round, furry body, the giant panda caught James’ eyes when he was just a child. But mentioning that first sighting with a giant panda, James said disapointedly,"I was a little sad because there were so many tourists going to see the pandas that I could only get a glimpse from a distance."

数年后，当时远远遥望大熊猫的詹姆斯竟成为了大熊猫的挚友。

James had watchedthe pandas from afar a few years before he finally turned out to be a close friend of the pandas.

“我从小就希望未来的工作能和动物相关。当我意识到很多动物都逐渐走向濒危时，我就觉得自己一定要投身于动物保护的事业。”喜欢与使命感，让詹姆斯在大学时理所当然的选择了主攻保护生物学专业。于他而言，大熊猫黑白相间的颜色从感官上来讲也是一种享受。“它既可以很有力量，也可以十分的温顺。”也许是熊猫身上的这种双重性格特点，与詹姆斯眼中的自己有一定的相似性，因此促使他从众多动物中选择了大熊猫。

"Working with animals had always been a dream for me as a kid. When I realized that many animals were gradually becoming endangered, I felt that I should devote myself to animal conservation."His love and sense of mission made it a natural choice for James to major in conservation biology at university. For him, the black and white colouration of the pandas is also a pleasure for the senses. "Itcan be very powerful and also very docile." In James' eyes, panda'sdual personality might have similarity with himself, which prompted him to choose giant pandas from many animals.

四川拥有很多大山，让大熊猫有更多的栖息地可选择。此外，这里生长着大量的竹子，也成为了吸引大熊猫在此生活的原因。因此，詹姆斯当机立断选择了来四川开启他的职业生涯。

There are many mountains in Sichuan, which gives the pandas more habitats to choose from. In addition, the abundance of bamboo here has also been an attraction for the pandas to live here. As a result, James chose to start his career in Sichuan.

“Perfect(完美), Home(家), Dream(梦想)”这是詹姆斯对他目前工作的评价。初来乍到时，他在生活上也有一些不适应，但熊猫基地的同事们在工作和生活上都给予了他一定的关心和照顾。“他们给我带来了很多温暖，就像家人一样。”

"Perfect, home, dream" is James' evaluation of his current work. When he first arrived in Sichuan, he also had some difficulties, but his colleagues at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding showed him care and concern in both work and life. "They brought me warmth of the welcome. They are like my family."

詹姆斯表示，保护濒危动物这件事对他而言不仅十分有意义，并且也是自己一直想做的。一想到自己在四川正在从事梦想的职业，和自己从小就喜欢的动物一起工作，詹姆斯就有了排除万难的勇气和动力。

James said that protecting endangered animals is not only a meaningful thing, but also a dreamthat he has always wanted to realize. Everytime when he thinksthat he is pursuing his dream career in Sichuan, working with animals he has loved since he was a child, James has the courage and motivation to overcome all obstacles.

“四川在动物领域的发展

充满希望!”

"In Sichuan,the development in the field of animal protection is hopeful!"

“Ganshazi，Zhuazi”“我还是能吃辣的，我最喜欢吃锅盔，人民中路有一家锅盔很好吃!”当被问到四川时，詹姆斯如数家珍。

"What are you doing?" "What’s up?""I can do spicy. I like Guokui the most. There’s one in the Renmin Zhong Road and that is super delicious!"When asked about Sichuan, James is talktive.

“成都多年来，在各方面的发展都给我留下了很深的印象。”詹姆斯表示，成都在地铁系统和环境保护两个领域的变化让他最为印象深刻。

"I amvery impressed with the development of Chengdu in all areas over the years."James saidthe changes in Chengduare very impressivein two areas: the metro system and environmental protection.

“来到四川后，我对这里的印象就是当地的生物多样性很丰富。大熊猫、金丝猴等许多珍稀动物在这里安家。”詹姆斯表示，如果人们没有环保意识，许多动物都会最终走向灭绝。而四川这么多年来，在节约资源、建设城市绿洲、限制城镇化过度扩张等方面都做得非常好。

"Sichuan is considered a bio-diversity hot spot. Giant pandas, rhinopithecus and many other rare animals make their homes here."James said that if people do not have environmental awareness, many animals will eventually go extinct. Sichuan has done a great job over the years in conserving resources, building green and limiting theexpansion of cities so much.

詹姆斯表示，为给大熊猫创造一个更好的居住环境，成都大熊猫繁育研究基地在设计熊猫居住的房屋、攀爬的地方和玩具等方面都十分用心，甚至还会在冬天为大熊猫准备人造雪。“不仅如此，连大熊猫可能会喜欢的气味，都会考虑进去。”詹姆斯说。

James said that in order to create a better living environment for the pandas, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding has taken great care in designing the houses, climbing places and toys for pandas, and even preparing artificial snow for the pandas in winter. "Besides, the smells that the pandas might like are taken into consideration."James said.

“我们真的尽一切努力让它们(大熊猫)生活得更舒适和开心。”詹姆斯表示，这些年来，四川在动物领域的发展是充满希望的。为保护大熊猫生活的栖息地和生态系统，2017年1月，大熊猫国家公园体制试点工作全面启动，试点区域地跨四川、陕西、甘肃三省。“目前来看，无论是它的设计还是规划都很完美。”对此，詹姆斯表示期待。

"We really do everything we can to help pandas live more comfortably and happily."James said that over the years, Sichuan's development in the field of animal protection is hopeful. In order to protect the habitat and ecosystem of pandas, a pilot giant panda national park system was fully launched in January 2017, with the pilot area spanning three provinces: Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu. "So far, both its design and planning are perfect."James expressed his expectations.

Q:大熊猫除了竹子还喜欢吃什么?

A:苹果!大熊猫也很喜欢吃苹果这种甜的，我在训练大熊猫时，常常用苹果作为对它们的奖励。

Q:What else do pandas like to eat besides bamboo?

A:Apples! Giant pandas also like to eat sweet things like apples. I often use apples as a rewardwhen I train them.

Q:作为专门研究动物行为的专家，你如何区分熊猫?因为它们看起来似乎每一只都长得很相似。

A:区分大熊猫对我来说也是有挑战的，但是观察它们的性格是一个不错的方法。有的熊猫很害羞，有的很有进攻性，有的反应很慢。我也会通过每只熊猫的鼻子、眼周、手掌等部位的样子来区分它们。

Q:As an expertin animal training, how do you differentiate pandas? Because they all look alike.

A:It is also challenging for me to distinguish pandas, but it is a good way to observe their personalities. Some pandas are shy, some are aggressive, and some are slow to react. I will also distinguish each panda by the appearance of the nose, eye area, palm, etc.
