相比饲养牦牛，野牦牛的显著特点就是浑身覆盖厚密的毛发，胸部、腹部的毛发尤其长，几乎垂到地面，可以很好的遮风挡雨。在声音方面，野牦牛的叫声并不是我们熟知的哞哞叫，而是类似猪的哼叫，所以也被称为“猪声牛”。
