A ping-pong table is of 4.1785 square meters, a badminton court covers 81.74 square meters, and a basketball court spans 420 square meters... The largest piece by the Yi ethnic group painter, Shuare Shizhu, takes up 850 square meters, approximately the equivalent of 200 ping-pong tables, 10 badminton courts, or 2 basketball courts.
In Jintang County, Chengdu City, he utilizes an abandoned factory of 30,000 square meters as both his studio and exhibition space.
Shuare Shizhu began learning to paint in high school. Upon receiving formal education in his first year of college, he discovered his particular affection for "large-scale" paintings, referring to works of art with exceptionally large areas.
Upon completing his master's degree, Shuare Shizhu initially intended to seek his fortune in Beijing or Shanghai, but it was challenging to find a studio akin to a "train station waiting hall". Simultaneously, "no museums or galleries exhibit such works". Once, he happened to seephotos of the abandoned factory in Jintang from a friend, and filled with excitement, he immediately packed his belongings, rented two small trucks, and moved there.
Shuare Shizhu rented the 30,000 square meter abandoned factory as his own studio to create "large-scale" paintings. From 2020 on, he has been painting there for three years.
Shuare Shizhu, born in Mabian County, Leshan City, draws much of his creative inspiration and themes from the history and culture of the Yi people, as well as his past life experiences in his hometown. One of his teachers observed that from Shizhu's oil paintings, one can perceive not only his childhood and his ethnic group, but also the distinctive aroma of the Daliang Mountains emanating from the blocks of color and strokes of his brush.
"The creation of a painting may span five to six months, during which I continually challenge myself, constantly generating new inspirations, and discovering fresh perspectives every day." To relax himself from the long-time work, Shizhu often works on multiple pieces simultaneously, allowing for emotional adjustments. At peak times, over a dozen unfinished works spread across the 200-meter stretch from the entrance to the depth of his workshop.
There are always some challenges. Torrential summer rains sometimes flood his works; fierce winds leave their marks on the canvases. Cost is another problem. On one hand, he explores ways to economize on painting materials, expressing his artistic ideas in a "cost-effective manner". On the other, he sells his works or undertakes wall painting projects, using the proceeds to fund his continued creation.
As for the future, Shuare Shizhuhas no concrete plans, just a desire to "paint more". Simultaneously, he hopes to have opportunities to utilize "unconventional" exhibition spaces, such as on the streets or in forests, to expose more people to his works.
