With the release of new archaeological findings from the Sanxingdui site's sacrificial pits and the 'Coloured Sanxingdui' Chinese culture global promotion launched by SICC, Chuanguan News, the Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics and Archeology Research Institute, and Sanxingdui Museum in Guanghan, the vibrant atmosphere in Sichuan has reached something of a crescendo, attracting more and more people to take part in 'colouring' Sanxingdui cultural relics for themselves.

It is reported that afew days ago, about 10 artists (or groups thereof) from all over the world entered into the event, all working to create an 'artistic' Sanxingdui by varying means – from traditional Chinese painting to oil painting, and even new media art.

"Sanxingdui's bronzeware is very special. It looks very cutting-edge even today, and even surpasses many contemporary arts works in creative terms." said Wang Shenyong, president of Sichuan Province Meticulous Painting Society and assistant to the president of Sichuan Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting Academy, as he shared his views on Sanxingdui bronzeware with us. He drew inspiration from the original Sanxingdui bronze figure's shape, used a comprehensive range of techniques drawn from Chinese painting traditions, and coloured it using mineral pigments such as cinnabar. He believesthat the Sanxingdui cultural relics were originallypainted using natural pigments such as mineral pigments, and that the colours gradually faded away after thousands of years.

Yao Yehong, the Sichuan Artists Association's vice president and Chengdu Artists Association's president, also chose a traditionaltechnique to 'colour' Sanxingdui cultural relics. He stated: "The colours of many Sanxingdui cultural relics must have been very bright and rich back then, which matches perfectly with traditional Chinese painting." For this re-creation project, he selected the three representative Sanxingdui cultural relics of the Bronze Mask, Bronze Sacred Tree, and Bronze Sacred Bird to render and depict in a picture through utilizing a combination of freehand and realistic brushwork.

Meanwhile, in the works of young artists, Sanxingdui is 're-imagined' in a more personalized way. Young artist Zeng Pu chose the Kneeling Bronze Figure as the object of his re-creation. The figure's upper body is a mask, and the lower body remindshim of the pottery figurines of the Han Dynasty, which makeshim feel a sense of connection and inheritance between civilizations. In terms of colouring, Zeng Pu applied rich colours such as red, yellow, and pink to his work. He said: "Sanxingdui cultural relics before their colours faded may be have been particularly gorgeous and dreamy."

Another young artist Wu Jiangtao had visited Sanxingdui three times and found that 'weirdness' was the main impression that the cultural relics there gave her. "They have big eyes and big ears, and this kind of shape is very distinctive!" Wu Jiangtao said, as she shared her feelings with us. Wu Jiangtao's painting combinedthe cultural relic with her own creative personality. The background of the painting was divided into two parts by a contrast between black and pink, and the bronze mask had grown light pink ears, while the bulging eyes also seemed less shocking after being painted with light blue. This shaped the work into having the appearance of a cute and furry toy.

Some new media art works have tried to endow Sanxingdui cultural relics with more possibilities without confining them to the single, flat dimension of traditional painting. In the eyes ofexperimental artist Chen Qiang, Sanxingdui cultural relics' creators were artists themselves, and so he hopes to pay tribute to them in an artistic way. At the creation space, Chen Qiang took out a specially made musical instrument, and performed his original music, hoping to travel through time and space to use his instrument, music, and sound work to hold a dialogue with Sanxingdui civilization.

There are also creators who chose to take part in the re-creation project as part of multi-disciplinary and crossover creation teams. The U-CUTE team brings together young designers and engineers from various industries such as architecture design, interior design, original illustrations, and dynamic vision. They wish to arouse a huge new interest in Sanxingdui culture, and so Sichuan culture, among foreigners through utilizing the bronze mask to help teach people some words and phrases in the Sichuan dialect. The artists of the U-CUTE team deployed digital images and intelligent language technology to endow the bronze mask with dynamic expressions and some basic linguistic ability, thereby creating a bronze mask that could say"great" and "comfortable" in the Sichuan dialect, thereby enabling people from all over the world to hold a dialogue with ancient cultural relics across time and space with a modern language.
