Established in 1965, Wanglang National Nature Reserve is one of the earliest nature reserves aiming at protecting giant pandas. Comparing to Huanglong, Jiuzhaigou, Tangjiahe and other nature reserves, Wanglang National Nature Reserve is rarely known by people. However, geologically, it's the critical conjunction of giant panda habitats in Jiuzhaigou, Songpan, Pingwu and Beichuan.

Wanglang National Nature Reserve holds the most wild giant pandas in China. According to the investigation, there're 1,864 wild giant pandas in China and 335 are in Pingwu, accounting for about 20% of the total, ranking the first in the country. However, unlike the human-raised giant pandas, these “forest hermits” rarely show themselves to the public.
